Compared to most other countries, Sweden has a high employment rate. A key factor behind this is the high level of female participation in the labour force.
The employment rate represents the share of working-age adults who are employed. In Sweden, this rate rose significantly during the 1960s and 1970s, largely due to a substantial increase in female labour force participation, which helped reduce the employment gap between men and women. In more recent years, the employment rate temporarily declined during the 2008-2009 financial crisis but has since recovered, reaching levels even higher than those seen before the downturn.
